About Us

Our History and Evolving Vision

The Baobab Home grows alongside the Bagamoyo community in Tanzania, weaving together education, sustainability, and community care. From our early days serving breakfast to students and supporting HIV+ community members, to launching our own school, we've evolved to meet local needs while staying true to our founding spirit.

Our Journey

2004-2007: Community Foundations

We began by addressing urgent community needs - helping residents access HIV/AIDS treatment, supporting orphaned infants, and rebuilding homes after floods. Our breakfast program ensured students and HIV+ community members received proper nutrition, a service that continues today. During this time, we also sponsored the education of 11 former street youth who came to live with our founders, Terri and Caito.

2008-2010: Growing Roots

After establishing our US nonprofit status and gaining approval from Tanzanian social services, we opened the children's home. We purchased our 12-acre shamba (farm), which became our new home base. We embraced sustainable living by installing biogas for cooking and solar power systems.

2012-Present: Education & Innovation

The launch of Steven Tito Academy, named in memory of a beloved Baobab Home child, marked a new chapter. What started with 11 students has grown to serve 190 children annually, offering world-class education regardless of resources. Some of our first students are now in college!

Our farm has evolved into a vibrant learning laboratory where students explore environmental science, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. Recent additions include fish ponds, black soldier fly colonies, and expanded solar systems. The campus continues to grow, with new classrooms, a library, and the Monahan Hall bringing our community together.
