Thousands of people in Bagamoyo live in poorly constructed houses that do little to protect them from the elements.

With seasonal rains, the homes are vulnerable to water damage and dangerous molds, offering far from ideal living conditions for children and creating the possibility of a range of illnesses from malaria to pneumonia. The Baobab Home is helping to improve the housing situation by constructing homes for families with vulnerable children.

We use cost-effective and environmentally friendly methodology and design. The building materials and labor come from the Bagamoyo area where local capacity to build these homes has been strengthened by international volunteers from Canada.

In 2005 Salama and Selemani and their family were living in a house made of straw. Thanks to volunteer Chelsea Donahue and others Baobab built them a mud brick house that is far sturdier.

In 2006 Mama Habibu and her two lived in a one room crumbling mud brick home. Thanks to volunteers Annelieke and Marjolijn De Grouw and the planning of volunteer KT Miller, we built them a 3 room mud brick house

In 2007 Natural builder Elke Cole visited us and revolutionized how we thought about housing! She and the Bagamoyo Renovators combined skills and efforts to build a beautiful house for Mama Rehema and family using traditional methods and innovation.

In 2008 students from High Tech High in San Diego USA conquered all speed records and built a house in one day! Shani, Abdallah and Patrick are three boys in the 6th grade. They are doing well in school and are resourceful boys who just needed a roof over their heads. Thank you High Tech High!!
